George O. Poinar (1936-) is an entomologist. He is famous for popularizing the idea of extracting ancient DNA from amber, one of the main themes of the Jurassic Park films and novels.
In 1992, George, some of his family members and Dr. Raul J. Cano of California claimed to have extracted 125 million year old DNA from a weevil in Lebanese amber. However, recent studies suggest that this may have been contamination from modern organisms (Source 1).
His son, Hendrik Poinar, a biologist, has extracted DNA from giant ground sloth coprolites (Source 2).
